Beacon – 40′ Trad 1973 Charlie Fox/Phil White
Beacon is a charming 40’ trad stern narrowboat built in 1973 by Charlie Fox. She is constructed from a steel hull, with a marine ply and fibreglass cabin and top, and since 2016 has undergone a full refit by Phil White. She was last blacked in April 2023, and a full survey in November 2023 (summary available for viewing in the office).
Since the refit, she has been used by Broughton Church in Aylesbury as a floating soup kitchen and weekend boat for those in need of a little treat.
The cratch covered well deck is large at 6’7”, with bench seats either side that could comfortable seat 8.
A step leads down, through glazed forward doors, into the 10’2” saloon. The forward half is open, with a comfortable tub style chair, and room for additional freestanding furniture. The second half features bench seats either side, with storage under the starboard side, and a demountable table. This converts to a 6’2” x 5’0” cross bed double.
The 5’9” galley follows, with a stainless steel sink, Thetford gas oven, grill & 4 burner hob, and lots of storage. A slim wardrobe cupboard with hanging space sits at the aft end.
Next is the compact 2’7” bathroom, with doors with fold out across the width of the boat. There is a square shower enclosure with bi-folding doors, a Thetford PortaPotti loo, and a plastic fold down sink.
The stern cabin (8’3”) features 4 bunk beds, and the top two are collapsable to use the bottom bunks as additional seating. Again there is additional storage under these bunks. With a few modifications this could easily be converted to a second double if required.
The BMC 1.5 engine is housed beneath the aft steps, which was serviced in January 2022. These lead out onto the 3’0” stern deck.
She is centrally heated by a Webasto diesel fired system connected to 2 radiators and a towel rail. Hot water is via the engine, Webasto or immersion.
Lighting on board is LED throughout.
12v power is via 2x 100ah domestics with a separate starter. 240v power is via a landline only.
She is ideal for weekends away as a family, and could even make a floating home for first time boaters!
