£34,950 40ft Bill Singleton tug. 1991. 4 berths. Charming tug originally built and cruised on the Monmouthshire and Brecknockshire Canal. To cope with the shallow waters of that waterway the boat's bottom plate is a shallow V in section, which allows it to slip through the water effortlessly and makes mooring against a shallow bank a lot easier to achieve. The boat has a raised forward deck in the tug style (easy for jumping on and off at locks and so forth). Internally the woodwork is painted to give a light space despite being all portholes. A pair of free standing upholstered box bench seats in the saloon can be adapted to make a double berth, providing additional sleeping accommodation above and beyond the permanent double berth aft. There is also a demountable table on Desmo legs which creates a dining area. An attractive cast iron Arctic coal stove sits amidships. A CB Marine BMC 1.8 provides the propulsion. This is an eye catching boat and at 40ft in length one is easy to handle and cheaper to cruise and maintain.
£24,950 40ft Colecraft/Owner cruiser stern. 1984. 4 berths. This boat dates from a time when many pleasure narrowboats were built around the 40ft length. The arrival of the ubiquitous 57ft boat with all the modern gizmos was not on the horizon in that era. This boat has been owned by the same couple from new who have decided that sadly the time has come to hang up their windlasses. The fit out has been thoroughly thought through to create an excellent boat for high days and holidays and incorporates many neat little ideas - for example the calorifier can be drained down into the shower tray for winterising and simply pumped overboard. The upholstered saloon bench seats convert into a cross double berth whilst the fold down saloon table can convert into under and over twin bunks. It has been excellently maintained over the years and should provide many more years of pleasure and service to the new owner.
UNDER OFFER £55,950 52ft JD Narrowboats reverse layout cruiser stern. 2009. 2 berths. Little used boat (227 hours on engine clock) in "as new" condition. This boat, produced by JD Narrowboats at Shardlow, is in the popular reverse layout format. The interior fit out is in a thoroughly modern style with a pleasing use of ash and light oak. There is a permanent double berth with its own flat screen TV and built in DVD player, a walk through bathroom with a stylish quadrant shower cubicle, a reasonably sized saloon with a breakfast bar and an open plan galley area with steps up to the sociable cruiser stern. A very pleasing holiday and weekending boat and at 52ft, easy to manoeuvre. A 3kW inverter provides more than ample mains power when required and the propulsion is delivered by a 35hp Beta Marine diesel unit.
UNDER OFFER £44,950 53ft 6in GT Marine/BarryHawkins/Owner trad. 1999. 4 berths. GT were well known for producing good quality steelwork with clean lines. This 53ft 6in "go anywhere" 4 berth boat was then part fitted by Barry Hawkins at Atherstone and completed by the owner. The result is a well planned neat and tidy interior with good storage and accommodation. A good size saloon incorporates an L shaped dinette with a choice of small and large demountable tables for dining. The galley is reasonably equipped while the bathroom offers a three quarter size bath with the shower over. The bedroom has a wider than normal 4ft 6in double berth. On the technical side there is a substantial power bank of batteries installed, and a high quality 2kW Mastervolt inverter unit. The well regarded Beta marine 43hp diesel unit provides propulsion.
£74,500 68ft 6in Stoke on Trent trad. 2000. 5 berths. Stoke on Trent Boatbuilding have always been noted for their stylish traditional boats and Juno is a splendid example of their workmanship. The shell sports distinctive josher style bows and is adorned with replica rivets made with solid weld, not washers. Internally there is a good sized comfortable saloon are, a galley which includes a washing machine, beech block worktops and a delightful diesel fired Aga style Rayburn cooker, making the boat entirely gas free. Although the boat is all portholes, there are four roof top houdini hatches and two sets of side doors in the galley, creating a great deal of light and sense of space within the cabin. Beyond the galley in a centre cabin there is a dinette area which also converts to a double berth when required. Together with the permanent double berth and a 6ft bench seat single in the half boatman's cabin the boat is capable of sleeping 5 persons. A magnificent vintage Gardner 4L2 gleams in the engine room and to cap the whole thing a traditionally decorated half size boatman's cabin sits at the stern.
£52,000 60ft Floating Homes cruiser stern. 2003. 2 berths (but could be 4 with addition of a sofa bed). This boat's shell comes from the long established Fenland-based Floating Homes, with the interior fitted out by the first owners. The interior is a no nonsense durable construction with extensive use of ash giving a pleasing light feel to the interior. Currently a 2 berth boat, it would be simple to add a sofa bed to the large saloon area. This boat is designed primarily as a live aboard and has been used as such. The present owners have maintained it in a good condition. There is a full size fridge, separate freezer and household size washing machine installed. A massive 770Ah battery bank ensures a more than adequate power supply when out cruising. A Perkins diesel unit provides propulsion.
£29,950 35ft Black Country Narrowboats. 2001. 2 berths. Black Country Narrowboats are, as their name suggests built in the West Midlands near Dudley. This cruiser stern craft is an ideal boat for weekends and holidays and at 35ft can spin round on a sixpence. The interior is simple and light, with a neat and tidy finish. A solid fuel stove set at the aft end of the saloon provides a good spread of heating throughout the boat. The galley is well equipped for cooking and also has a fridge. The bathroom has a cassette wc and a shower tray with a tiled surround. The aft cabin contains a raised dinette which converts into a full double berth. A 3 cylinder Beta Marine diesel unit located beneath the sociable cruiser stern deck provides the propulsion.
£72,500 66ft Orion Narrowboats. 2000. 2 berths. Orion Narrowboats' distinctive shells have been an eye catching addition to the inland waterways for more than a decade and Oak is a fine example of their low sleek lines and fine steelwork. The interior has been fitted out with fantastic attention to detail - using reclaimed oak and incorporating elements such as a Victorian dresser, an antique style French wood burner, a Rayburn range in the galley and parquet flooring. It is, literally, a unique boat. Behind the carefully planned retro interior there is no shortage of modern fittings however - an engine driven 3.5kVA generator and a 2kW inverter run various appliances when needed such as the washing machine. In the engine room there is a vintage Gardner 2LW which uses a hydraulic drive system to provide propulsion and also a hydraulic bowthruster. The boat is a one off and viewing is highly recommended.
£67,950 57ft Liverpool/Alan Ashton. 2008. 4 berths. Fitted to a high standard in light oak with solid oak framing by the owner, a professional joiner, this boat is set out in the increasingly popular reverse layout style. The specification is high: a 3.5kVA engine driven generator and a 2.5kW inverter ensure that there is more than adequate mains power to run the built in full size washing machine. The interior shows considerable attention to detail with good storage, and neat touches such as the under gunnel wine rack and glass fronted saloon cabinets. A walk through bathroom area provides good space with a modern quadrant shower cubicle and an elegant ceramic basin unit installed. A raised dinette with a side hatch offers pleasant views and converts to a second double berth when required. An Isuzu 35 diesel, a unit much favoured by many hire fleet operators, provides the propulsion.
UNDER OFFER £104,950 70ft RW Davis Northwich Trader trad. 2008. 6 berths. RW Davis's Northwich Trader tugs are among the most distinctive narrowboats built in the last 20 years. Based on the original Yarwood's template the shell has wonderful detail including in excess of 1000 replica rivets. Inside this unashamedly traditional craft sits a vintage Gardner 3LW just forward of the replica boatman's cabin. The shell was supplied with the engine installed and the boatman's cabin complete. The main cabin interior was fitted out on RW Davis's yard moorings by the present owner, a professional boat fitter by trade, following RWD's style of painted interiors, which can make a refreshing change from the ubiquity of plain wood. It opens up the possibility of all sorts of colour schemes for a boat interior. A centre cabin has been incorporated with a second drop down bed in the style of the boatman's cabin, offering a further double berth if required. The boat is in pristine condition and early viewing is recommended.
£74,950 64ft Keith Wood narrowboat semi trad. Oct 2004. 5/6 berths. Built by Keith Wood at his yard on the River Nene near Peterborough, this boat is a striking boat both in and out. Designed as a live aboard, and used as such by the present owners from new, it has been thought through very carefully and provides excellent living space coupled with substantial storage. The interior woodwork is of excellent quality with great attention to detail. There are dining options built in too; a breakfast bar with stools for informal eating, and a dining table which can extend to the full width of the boat if required. Externally, in a break from tradition, the owners applied a pattern based upon a design by the architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. This motif is echoed in the use of leaded stained glass within the boat. All in all, the boat is a delightful bespoke built living space with unique character. On the practical side the boat comes with a built in cocooned 4kVA diesel genset which is more than adequate to run the washing machine and other appliances, and will recharge the batteries in the absence of a landline hook up. That tried and tested workhorse, the Beta B43, provides propulsion.
£89,950 56ft Sea Otter all aluminium cruiser stern. 2007. 3/4 berths. Sea Otter boats must be the lowest maintenance canal boats ever built. With a shell entirely constructed from marine grade aluminium there is no need for bottom blacking or anodes. Indeed there is no need for any paint at all - it is purely decorative. The manufacturer claims a life expectancy in excess of 100 years. The hull has a shallow V shape which helps the boat to slip effortlessly through the water with less wash. The ballast is a patented water system which simply drains out if the boat is lifted from the canal, and refills when put back in. The interior is fitted out to high standard as well - ash lining throughout with hardwood cappings. This particular Sea Otter boat has a customised variation from the standard layout - the owner had a small workshop included at the bow end which could easily be rejigged to make an office space, or even an extension to the existing saloon area. Propulsion is provided by a Nanni 40hp diesel.

Extensive use of ash throughout provides a light interior space, with built in saloon seating to maximise storage. There is a dinette situated between the saloon and the open plan galley. A "pram hood" cover over the stern deck provides good weather protection. The engine hold demonstrates just how well this boat has been cared for and there are just 403 hours of running time recorded on the Vetus 4.14 diesel unit. A Morso Squirrel multi fuel stove and Alde gas central heating provide cold weather comfort.

£27,950 40ft RW Davis 40ft cruiser stern. 1990. 2 berths. This craft was built and fitted out by the long standing and highly regarded boat builders, RW Davis & Sons. The first owner was a retired Royal Navy man and used the boat to cruise many places including the tidal Thames. The second owners refitted the galley to a more modern standard and diesel central heating has been added. The present and third owner bought the boat through Rugby Boat Sales in 2008 and has continued the modernisation, installing 230v throughout, an inverter, a rear "pram hood" cover for weather protection and additional dry space, and a solid fuel stove. The boat is ideal for 2 people who are seeking weekend breaks and holidays on the waterways, without breaking the bank to do so. There is a survey dating from July 2008 available to prospective buyers.
SOLD £84,950 67ft Piper Boats trad with extended rear deck. Nov 2004. 5/6 berths. Piper Boats have probably the longest pedigree of any builder in the UK canal world. David Piper started in 1969 and his son, Simon carries on the business today. Their boats have always been distinctive and there is a Piper Owners' Club - always a compliment to a builder's skills and reputation. Jabez was the subject of a glowing review in Waterways World, July 2005. The whole boat reflects the owners' love of art deco styling - and the sumptuous curves of the woodwork highlight this fact. The whole boat is lined with maple, including panels of bird's eye and burr maple. The spec is to a high standard as well: 3.5kVA Travel Power generator, 1.2kW Victron inverter/charger unit, fridge, freezer, washing machine, drying cupboard with matrix heater and extractor fan. The dinette seats move back and forth on hidden tracks electronically at the push of a button, and the permanent double uses a similar device to push the bed out into the middle, thus creating more elbow room. Propulsion derives from the tried and tested Beta 43hp diesel, with manoeuvring facilitated by a bowthruster.
SOLD £24,950 46ft Stowe Hill Marine trad. 1986. 3 berths. This boat dates from the earlier days of Stowe Hill Marine's boat building. It is hull with good lines and at 46ft in length it is easy to handle. Used as a leisure craft it is simply but adequately equipped; there is a saloon with built in upholstered bench seating and a Squirrel multi fuel stove. Beyond this lies the galley, which has a four burner cooker with oven and grill and a 3-way Gas/12v/230v fridge. The bathroom contains a full size bath with a shower over, basin and a porta potti. A bedroom with a permanent double berth follows. Propulsion derives from a Calcutt Marine 1.8 litre BMC diesel. The boat would benefit greatly from some tlc: new carpets and upholstery would transform the interior. The exterior paintwork would also improve with some retouching. This is, on the face of it, a sound boat of good pedigreeideal for someone who is happy to put in some work, and the price reflects that.
UNDER OFFER £49,950 60ft Liverpool Boat Co semi trad. 2003. 6 berths. This boat was fitted out to a higher standard of joinery than LBC's standard boats on the instructions of the first owner. Fitted with large portholes throughout, there are also two sets of side doors either side of the raised dinette, which converts to a double berth if required. A centre cabin in the boat has twin "under and over" bunk beds and there is a permanent double berth aft. A 40hp Beta Marine BV1903 diesel provides propulsion.

It is, unusually for a Liverpool shell, all portholes, but the two sets of side hatches in the galley and saloon area both admit a great deal of light. There are clear acrylic inserts for these that allow the daylight in but not the weather. A good sized saloon contains a large sofa bed (available by separate negotiation to the buyer if desired). The galley beyond is open plan. A centre cabin contains a single berth on an upholstered built in bench seat and also doubles as a dining area with a removable table, or an office/utility space. There is a 1.5kW inverter fitted. Propulsion is provided by an Isuzu 33hp diesel.
SOLD £92,500 70ft RW Davis Northwich Trader tug. 2005. 4 berths. RW Davis's Northwich Trader tugs are among the most distinctive narrowboats built in the last 20 years. Derived the original Yarwood's working boat template the shell has wonderful detail including in excess of 1000 replica rivets. Inside this unashamedly traditional craft sits a vintage Gardner 3LW just forward of the replica boatman's cabin. The interior joinery is of a standard that matches RW Davis's own work - a fact that the boat yard readily acknowledges. The boat is gas free: an Aga type diesel fired range provides cooking and also central heating. Designed for long term cruising and living aboard independent of shore power there is a built in 6kVA cocooned generator and a 4kW inverter. A washing machine is also fitted. Probably the best RWD Northwich to come to the used market for some considerable time.
SOLD £44,950 55ft Liverpool Boat Co/Professional owner fit out. 2004. 2 berths. Extremely well-cared for boat in and out. If you think the paintwork looks good in the photos that's because its is. A Barrus Shire 45hp diesel provides gutsy propulsion. The bedroom has a 4ft 6in wide cross bed. Much loved by the owners who have had the boat from new, they are selling reluctantly owing to ill health.
>£35,000 Peter Nicholls (Yacht builders) Ltd inspection launch 1997. 4 berth. Peter Nicholls built just a handful of these inspection launches and, as you would expect from this builder, the craftsmanship is second to none. The hull has 45 degree chines to a 4ft bottom plate which allows the boat to glide almost effortlessly through the water. Steering is by a hydraulic wheel from a forward position in the cockpit. The interior is cleverly designed to maximise the restricted space offered by a 33ft boat. The boat makes an eye-catching impression and is easy to manoeuvre - it can be turned around in much of the canal. The present owner, who commissioned the boat, has used it for weekend trips and holiday breaks and the engine has clocked just over 1000 hours at the time of our inspection. There is some cosmetic tlc required - the inspection window frames have leaked in the past and although running repairs have been made it might be wise to remove and reseal them. The aft doors also need rubbing back and re-varnishing. This is reflected in the asking price of what is an outstanding and unusual canal boat.
