50′ Tug conversion 1983 Warren Bros
Eliza is a 50ft BCN converted tug narrowboat with an interesting history. It was built as a 40ft craft in 1983 by Warren Bros of Burton on Trent, in an attempt to save the works from closure. Warren’s principal business was the fabrication of steel pressure vessels for the brewing industry. It is said that the quality of steel used may therefore be superior and a survey by Steve Hand (2013), confirmed the good condition of the hull. The boat was surveyed again in 2016 and March 2019 with no major issues. The boat was “stretched” by 10ft in 2000 by Streethay Wharf. The marine Lister JP2M was fitted in 2003 by Roger Fuller.
The whole boat has a stylish, modern feel having been totally refurbished and updated in the last six months to a very high standard. The forward bedroom was also added as a new extension this year thereby providing a fixed double berth over what had been the tug deck. The boat is entered from the stern via the traditional back cabin, with cross bed, a Faverhsham stove (reconditioned in 2019) and plenty of storage. The engine room is the heart of the boat and the Lister itself just has to be heard. Next comes the shower room area which is all new with some beautifully creative porthole modesty inserts.
The galley provides lots of working space and has solid Jacobean oak worktops over black hand patina’d units. The saloon features a Hobbit stove (new in 2019) and a large futon style settee. There is also a large pigeon box overhead providing lots of additional light as do the large portside sidedoors (with new made to measure fly screens). Finally the fixed double is situated in the super cosy forward cabin.
Although Eliza is an older boat, the care taken by her owners and the recent improvements made put her high up the desirable boats list with her character, comfort and good solid lines.
